For the past year, I settled at this very special place in north central Texas called 29 Acres. It basically helps young adults with autism and other disabilities learn many social skills, employment skills, independent living skills and so much more. I’ve made a lot of friends and making many improvements in managing my behaviors.
Before I came across 29 Acres, I was basically a pathetic basement dweller in my parents’ home looking my purpose at this point in my life. My parents spent several months finding the perfect autism program to help me with my disabilities and other flaws so I could do something with my life instead of just sitting on the couch bored and depressed out of my mind. When we learned about this place we were astounded—it sounded like a perfect fit for me where I would learn more independent living, behavior management and more. And indeed, it was. Ever since then, I’ve come so far, and I’ve learned so many skills from this place and become so attached to this special place that makes me feel extremely unique in multiple ways. For example, I appreciate the whenever the staff guides me through the DFW airport whenever I take vacations at home. Before then, I’d never been able to go on a plane on my own.
With my fellow clients, learning how to share a house/apartment makes me feel like a real changed man and I feel like both the clients and staff truly understand me and I appreciate their kindness and patience. I also like hanging out with the other clients. My roommates and I have had a few flukes with each other (ex. accusations of using the other’s utensils), but we’ve managed to mostly overcome those flaws and get along splendidly.
Overall, I came to this special unique place to work more on my behavior management and living skills. I was nervous when I first came but I eventually managed to adapt to this living community quite splendidly. Thus, I vow to deal with whatever inconvenient challenge impasses me whatever triggering challenge I meet, by looking right in the face and conquer it. And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing basically.
